traveler.

I have always loved to travel. I am fortunate that I have been able to travel the world throughout my life and even had the opportunity to live abroad during college. I have traveled to 31 countries and to 49 of our 50 states, the remaining state I have left to visit is Kansas.

I believe that traveling breaks down barriers opening us up to love and understanding of others. Traveling is empowering and can lead us to the best version of ourselves.

foodie.

Being a foodie is more than eating good food, it is about immersing yourself in the whole experience. In addition to exploring new cuisines, dishes, and drinks with your tastebuds it is also about how the experience touches your soul.

I also can be found experimenting in my own kitchen with new recipes and recreating old family dishes. When I travel to another country I love to try the street food and local dishes as it connects you to the spirit of the place. I also love to experience, and it really is an experience, Michelin starred restaurants and the Top 50 restaurants in the world (so far I've been to 6).

survivor.

The past few years have been full of challenges and I am forever grateful to all my friends and family for their support. Over the past five years I have lost two travel warriors in my life that instilled my love of travel -my amazing mother & loving grandmother, and also my curious & creative uncle. And my beloved cat, Posh. If that wasn’t “enough”, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer in 2016- after 5 months of chemo, 35 rounds of radiation, and 4 surgeries I am what they call NED (no evidence of disease). I continue to take a daily pill and get a monthly shot to keep my hormone levels low to prevent recurrence. Feel free to read about my breast cancer journey here.

About the Author:

Kristin Walega

Every day I drive by the Washington, DC monuments and houses of government that represent the past and the future of our country. Their beauty and grandeur symbolize freedom, struggle, sacrifice, and possibility.

I love to explore this beautiful world of ours and I hope you enjoy the recounts of my travels as much as I enjoy traveling. In September 2018 I left my job, after having worked at City Year for over 21 years, to travel the world - visiting 16 countries and 17 states. I will share my past adventures, tips, and new travels on my blog.

All of the challenges of the past 5 years have taught me to experience as much as I can in life now. And I have learned that I am stronger than I ever knew. I am forever grateful for my community of family and friends they gave me the strength to get through the hard days.

I am now the COO at the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC), where we follow evidence based research, advocate to end breast cancer, and train advocates in policy and science to end breast cancer.

The postings on this site are my own and may not represent NBCCs positions, strategies or opinions.
